What is a drill bit?

Tip: The top tapered part of the drill bit consists of the tooth spur and cutting edge.

Notch: The spiral channel from the cutting edge to the shank. It helps to remove the material cut from the hole.

The different parts between drill bit types are usually the cutting edges. Their different designs make some more suitable than others for cutting certain materials. There are also different designs depending on the drill that needs to be installed and the type of hole being drilled.

What are the materials used for the drill bits?

High-Speed Steel: Made from carbon steel with chromium and vanadium added. It is suitable for drilling in wood, plastics, and soft metals.

Cobalt: A very strong alloy metal for drilling through hard materials. Resistant to heat and corrosion, it is the best drill for stainless steel.

Carbide tip: This drill uses carbide only at the tip, one of the hardest materials on earth. Suitable for drilling in masonry, tile, and concrete. 

Integral carbide: A drill bit described above is made entirely of carbide. It is suitable for drilling into hard materials.

Tungsten Carbide: Made from a mixture of tungsten metal and carbon. It is more wear resistant than the standard carbide above. It is suitable for drilling in extremely hard materials such as masonry.

What are the coatings for the drill bits?

Black Oxide: This coating helps the drill retain lubricant and prevents rusting.

TiN: A titanium nitrate coating that slows down the wear of drills used to cut metal.

TiAIM: A titanium aluminum nitrate coating that improves the wear resistance and heat resistance of drills used to cut metal.

SG: A silicone coating that helps drill bits penetrate dense metals.

You may also have heard of HSS bits and SDS bits. So what are they?

As mentioned in the materials section above, HSS drill bits are made of high-speed steel. It is often used for multi-purpose drilling because it can be used in wood, plastics, and metals. HSS bits are also the best bits for soft metals.

SDS bits are a type of drill used in SDS drills. SDS stands for slotted drive shaft and refers to how the bit is held in the collet of the drill. The drill's shank has double grooves that strengthen it and contribute to excellent hammering action. It is made of tungsten carbide, and the bit and drill together make drilling in concrete, stone, and rock much easier.
